The Drastic situation in India; a message for Urbanization

Urbanization; it refers to making an area more Urban, the process of population shifting from rural to be more centered in an Urban area. Though as an area's region and population becomes more organized, there are significant drawbacks to living in Urban areas that people may not be aware of. The situation in New Delhi, India's capital, can be a warning for the rest of the world to be aware that increased industrialization will continue to affect our health.

India is the second most populated country on the planet, behind China. The billion plus people are exposed to excess air pollution every year. This amount of population at the rate of their transportation/industrialization has resulted in a smog hovering over India. According to a study by the University of Chicago, residents in New Delhi can expect to live as many as 10 years longer if the air pollution was reduced to U.N guideline levels.

Smog is not new to this area of India, as it hangs thickly over many Urban areas. The main drawbacks from Urbanization results in toxic air levels from increased industrial pollution and Car/Truck emissions. Other cities around India are also among the most polluted in the world such as; Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal. As India becomes more Urbanized, it results in an increased demand of energy among other factors. Though people can try to drive less and save energy in my opinion, there looks to be no real solution. The people of India are calling on the government to take more action to reduce air pollution.

Though the government has a clean air campaign in affect, aiming to reduce toxic air particles by 30% between 2019-2024, the report by the University of Chicago says its actually gotten worse. Now, in an effort to reduce air pollution levels near the nation's capital of New Delhi, India's environmental committee issued an emergency order directing the close of schools and colleges to further notice.

In addition, all lands & streets around New Delhi has restricted traveling. The committee also restricted all non essential construction and transportation around cities. These toxic air levels around neighboring cities leaves citizens gasping for air and at risk for respiratory problems.

According to the World Health Organization, an air quality index between 0-50 is good, however India has reported levels as high as 500 in some areas of the capital...

The situation in India is not just a problem for India but for other places around the world. Chicago has seen an increase its Urban Population, resulting in increase use of energy, food, and industrial pollution.  We can make a difference by driving less if possible and turning off lights. Plant a tree.
